Has Summer Damaged Your Skin Barrier? How to Reset Your Skin for Autumn

Has Summer Damaged Your Skin Barrier? How to Reset Your Skin for Autumn

After months of sunshine, warmer weather, holidays and travel, your skin may be feeling the effects of summer too.

You might notice that it feels drier or tighter than usual. Pigmentation may look more obvious, your skin might seem a little dull, or products you’ve happily used before suddenly don’t feel quite so comfortable.

It can be tempting to see September as the time to bring everything back out: retinol, exfoliating acids, brightening serums and anything else promising to tackle the signs of summer.

But before trying to fix everything at once, there’s something else worth thinking about first: your skin barrier.

What Is Your Skin Barrier?

You’ve probably heard a lot about “skin barrier repair” recently, but the skin barrier isn’t simply another skincare trend.

Put simply, your skin barrier is the outermost layer of your skin. Think of it as your skin’s protective shield. It helps to keep moisture in while protecting your skin from external irritants.

When that barrier is working well, skin is better able to retain hydration and generally feels comfortable and balanced.

When it isn’t working as effectively, moisture can escape more easily. That’s when you may start to notice dryness, tightness, sensitivity or irritation.

Why Can Your Skin Barrier Struggle After Summer?

Summer doesn’t automatically mean a damaged skin barrier, but it does bring together several things that can affect how our skin looks and feels.

Sun exposure is an obvious one. Higher levels of UV exposure can affect normal skin barrier function, as well as contributing to pigmentation and some of the visible signs of skin ageing.

Then there’s heat, air conditioning and travel. Moving between hot outdoor temperatures and heavily air-conditioned environments can leave skin feeling dehydrated, while flights and changes in climate can add to the problem.

Swimming can play a part too. Chlorine, salt water, more frequent showering and additional cleansing to remove SPF can all leave skin feeling drier than usual.

And then there’s skincare itself.

We may be cleansing more, exfoliating to tackle congestion, using acids for pigmentation and layering multiple active ingredients. Individually, these products may have a perfectly valid place in your routine. But sometimes, particularly when skin is already feeling sensitive, more isn’t necessarily better.

What Are the Signs of a Damaged Skin Barrier?

Everyone’s skin is different, but some common signs that your barrier may be struggling include:

  • dryness or flaking
  • tightness, particularly after cleansing
  • increased sensitivity or redness
  • rough or uneven texture
  • itching or irritation
  • products suddenly stinging when you apply them

One of the biggest clues is simply that your skin isn’t behaving like your skin.

If something you’ve used comfortably for months suddenly starts to sting, for example, it may be worth looking at what else has changed before immediately replacing it or adding another product.

How Can You Support Your Skin Barrier After Summer?

The good news is that you don’t necessarily need to buy an entirely new skincare routine.

Sometimes, the most useful thing you can do is simplify what you’re already using.

Start with a gentle cleanser that effectively removes makeup, SPF and the day’s build-up without leaving your face feeling stripped or uncomfortably tight.

Next, think about hydration and barrier support. Ingredients such as hyaluronic acid and glycerin can help the skin retain moisture, while ceramides help support the skin’s natural protective barrier.

This is also a good time to look at how many active ingredients you’re using.

Retinol, exfoliating acids and other actives aren’t inherently bad for your skin barrier. Used appropriately, they can be incredibly useful. But if your skin is already flaking, stinging or unusually reactive, now may not be the time to increase their strength or introduce several new products at once.

“Good skincare doesn’t need to be complicated. I would much rather someone used a few well-chosen products consistently than continually added new actives because they had seen them trending online.”
— Dr Preema Vig

That doesn’t mean abandoning your favourite actives forever. Once your skin feels comfortable and balanced again, you can gradually reintroduce targeted products according to what your skin actually needs.

What About Post-Summer Pigmentation?

Pigmentation is often one of the first things we notice after summer, and understandably, it’s something many people want to tackle straight away.

But stronger isn’t necessarily better.

If your skin is also dry, irritated or unusually sensitive, immediately reaching for stronger acids, retinoids and pigmentation products may not be the best starting point.

Getting your skin calm, hydrated and comfortable gives you a much better foundation before introducing more targeted skincare.

And, importantly, don’t put away the SPF just because summer is over.

“SPF isn’t a summer product. It’s one of the most important things you can do for your skin throughout the year, particularly if pigmentation is a concern.”
— Dr Preema Vig

UV exposure happens throughout the year, even when London is looking decidedly grey. Daily broad-spectrum SPF should remain part of your morning routine throughout autumn and winter, particularly if you’re using skincare designed to address pigmentation or visible signs of ageing.

Your Simple Post-Summer Skin Reset

If your skincare routine has become a little complicated over the summer, autumn is a good opportunity to go back to basics.

In the morning: gentle cleansing where needed, hydration or barrier support, moisturiser according to your skin type and broad-spectrum SPF.

In the evening: cleanse thoroughly but gently, use an appropriate serum or treatment, then moisturise.

It really can be that simple.

Once your skin feels comfortable again, you can start thinking more specifically about pigmentation, texture, breakouts or visible signs of ageing.

The aim isn’t to build the longest possible skincare routine. It’s to choose products that have a purpose, work well together and suit your skin.

Is It Time to Reset Your Skincare?

The end of summer is a good opportunity to take another look at what your skin actually needs.

Does it feel drier than it did a few months ago? Have products started to sting? Is your pigmentation more noticeable? Or has your bathroom shelf simply accumulated so many serums that you’re no longer entirely sure what each one is doing?

Before adding another active ingredient, consider whether your skin might benefit from a simpler approach.

Gentle cleansing, hydration, barrier support and daily SPF provide the foundations. From there, you can gradually introduce more targeted skincare according to your individual concerns.

A Few Products We Like

If your skin is feeling dry, dehydrated or a little more sensitive after summer, you don’t necessarily need to overhaul your entire routine. These are a few products we like for getting back to basics.

For gentle cleansing: iS Clinical Cream Cleanser
A lovely option when skin is feeling dry or sensitive. It’s designed to cleanse without leaving the skin feeling stripped or tight, so it can be particularly useful when your usual cleanser suddenly feels a little too much.

For extra barrier support: Revision CMT Post-Procedure Cream
Don’t be put off by the name. Although designed with post-procedure skin in mind, we like CMT when skin needs some extra care and comfort. It’s a good option to consider when the focus is less on adding another active and more on supporting skin that feels dry, sensitive or compromised.

For everyday protection: Tebiskin UV-LC SPF 50+
A favourite for sensitive, redness-prone or environmentally stressed skin. As well as providing high UVA and UVB protection, UV-LC is formulated to help calm and support the skin, making it particularly well suited to a post-summer skincare reset.

You certainly don’t need all three. The right products will depend on your skin, what you’re already using and what you’re trying to address.

Not Sure What Your Skin Needs?

If you’re not quite sure where to start, or your skin has changed over the summer, you can also book a skin consultation with us at Dr Preema London Clinic in Mayfair.

As part of your consultation, we can use our Aura 3D Imaging System to take a closer look at your skin and identify concerns that aren’t always obvious from looking in the mirror alone, including pigmentation, redness, texture and overall skin condition.

We can then look at what you’re currently using, what your skin actually needs and recommend a personalised skincare routine. Where appropriate, we can also discuss in-clinic treatments that may help with concerns such as post-summer pigmentation, redness, dehydration or changes in skin texture.

Because sometimes an autumn skin reset isn’t about adding more. It’s about making sure what you are using is right for your skin.
